The Our Transport Heritage Programme commemorates Britain's rich and globally important legacy in the development of transport and presents it to a new and wider audience. The most significant of the many hundreds of locations covered by the Programme willbe marked with a heritage plaque, known colloquially as a ‘Red Wheel', which will be erected on the site.
The first Red Wheels will be unveiled in Derbyshire in time for the start of the 2009 tourist season at Easter, with further plaques unveiled throughout Britain in the coming months and years.
The Our Transport Heritage Programme links with, and takes advice from, national and local historians, industrial archaeologists and other experts, and historical societies. The aim is to draw the public's attention to the sites of greatest significance to our transport heritage.
